Master Gardener Training Held In Warren

Training session #3 for Master Gardeners of the Delta was held in Warren last week at the Warren Housing Authority.  Master Gardeners of the Delta encompasses Ashley, Bradley, Chicot, Desha and Drew counties.  Each trainee is receiving 40 hours of instruction in topics related to gardening.  Classes consist of lectures with various teachers form throughout the state.  Janet Carson, Extension Horticulture Specialist, presented training on shrubs, perennial plants, annual plants and square foot gardening.  John Gavin, County Agent for Bradley County spoke about tomatoes in the home garden.  Randy Greer, form Crop Production Services and Amanda Greer, Plant Pathology Program Technician, SEREC, were also presenting topics.  Bradley County participants were trainees: Mike Weatherford, Nancy Weatherford, Cheery Cook, Hal Munford and Master Gardener of the Delta, Diane Purvis.

After receiving training,Master Gardeners have one year to complete 40 hours volunteer time with 20 hours involved in sanctioned projects and 20 hours of additional education.  After the first year, 20 hours of volunteer hours are required each year to obtain recertifcation.  Master Gardeners work on demonstration gardens, school projects, landscape work, and other projects.  They give talks to groups interested in horticulture and answer questions about lawn care.
