City Council Conducts Monthly Meeting

The Warren City Council met Monday evening for their regular monthly meeting with all aldermen present.  After approving the minutes for the January 12 meeting, the council approved the City Clerk's report:  financial statement, city sales and use tax, county sales and use tax, and the District Court Clerk's report.

In the mayor's report, Mayor Martin recognized Donna Lawhon of BCEDC, who informed the council that the national ad paid for by BCEDC is also online at tradeandindustrydev.com.  She also told the council that the soils tests that came back last month have been released to the industry looking at the Griggs property.  They expect to hear from them soon.

Roger George was appointed to a 3-year term on the Board of Electrical Examiners as was Ron St. John.

The council reviewed reports of Police Chief Randy Peek, Fire Chief Howard Edwards, Sanitation and Building Official Mike May, and Street Foreman Ricky Joe Davis.  Zack Burks, a member of the Police Committee noted that North Myrtle Street was littered Monday morning with garbage that had been scattered by stray animals.  He commented that the number of stray cats in the area are becoming more and more of a problem and that people seem to be allowing their dogs to run free.  Mayor Martin noted that this is a problem around town and in other towns.  Chief Edwards pointed out that the department had been called out to a grass fire this afternoon.  Mike May informed the council of plans to sell an older garbage truck from the 70's or 80's.  He was asked to look into the status of property cleanup at 521 North Walnut.

The Public Street hearing will be held Thursday, February 19, at 5:30 p.m.

After reviewing reports of boards and commissions, Alderman Zack Burks noted that Warren lost a valued citizen last week at the death of Sandra Dupree Campbell.  Mayor Martin said that statement would be noted in the minutes of the meeting.

It was pointed out that a Job Fair will be held April 16 at Immanuel Baptist Church at 10:00 a.m.  Mayor Martin noted that Alderman Dorothy Henderson once again is organizing this event.
