Monticello to host inaugural Forest Festival


The Monticello Festival and Events Association’s Board of Directors is making final preparations for the inaugural Forest Festival are being made by the association’s board of directors.
The Forest Festival will be held April 3-4 in McCloy Park in Monticello. The weekend of events is scheduled to kick-off fundraising efforts for the planned state-wide forestry festival, Arkansas Forest Fest, to be held in April 2016.
The festival will include the Miss Arkansas Forestry Pageant, which will include contestants ranging in age from birth to 18 years old.
Association President Zack Tucker said the pageants will be held at Earl Willis Auditorium on the campus of Drew Central.

“We are so excited to have Drew Central School District as a partner for this event,” Tucker said. “We would like to thank Drew Central for there contribution to the festival. We look forward to working with District for many year into the future.”
The pageants will begin Friday night and will continue Saturday morning into the late afternoon.
Pageant Director Jessica Milburn said contestants may register through April 2. The registration cost is $40, which includes one photograph for the photogenic contest. However, contestants may enter additional photos for $5 each.
Contestants can register for the pageant at the festival website, www.arkansasforestfest.com or by picking up a form at city hall.
Milburn said there will be no rehearsals for the pageant.
The festival will begin Friday April 3 with a parade at 4 p.m. and the open ceremonies to follow in McCloy Park.
There is no charge for the parade. Tucker said he’d like to see all the pageant contestants participate in the parade.
Since the festival will coincide with the observation of Arbor Day, there will be a tree planting in the park during the opening ceremonies. Vendors and other activities Friday night will open at 5 p.m. and will close at 10 p.m.
Saturday’s festivities are set to begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day.
The festival will include the Southern Fried Championship, where participants can enter in a deep fried food competition. The on-site event will have three categories: meat, sides, and dessert.
The festival will also include family entertainment, vendors, a carnival, and children’s activities.
Local band Cashbox will perform at 7:30 p.m. on the Commercial Bank Music Stage in McCloy Park.
Country Star Rodney Atkins will take the stage at 9 p.m. Atkins is known for hits like “Watching You,” “If You’re Going Through Hell,” and “Farmer’s Daughter.”
A meet and greet has been arranged for invited guests. Individuals can earn a chance to win the opportunity to meet Atkins by donating $5 to the Monticello Festival and Events Association.
Tucker said there will be several tickets drawn for the meet and greet Atkins, which will be held at 7:30 p.m.. Tickets can be purchased at city hall and at the festival until the winners are announced.
The concert and admission to the event is free to everyone.
