Hospital Board Votes Not To Renew Surgeon's Contract

During the Hospital Board meeting held July 23rd, the Bradley County Medical Center Board voted to purchase land west of the hospital from the First Presbyterian Church to be used for future expansion of hospital facilities.  The land is west of Jolly Street and north of the existing hospital parking lot.  It does not affect the Church facilities.

The board was briefed in detail on hospital finances by CFO Brandon Gorman.  He reported the hospital had an operating loss of $156,656.00 for June.  He also reported that Home Health care revenues were up 12.5% and that the hospital sales tax has a balance of around 2.9 million dollars.  Mr. Gorman said the sales tax owes $140,000.00 for the new x-ray machine that has been purchased.

On a motion by Dr. Wharton the following medical personnel were approved to work for the hospital:
Lydia Barley, RN, Wound Care Specialists
Nicolas Bianchi, MD, Telemed
Archana Hinduja, MD, Telemed
Vladimir Karpitskiy, MD, Telemed
Troy Koch, MD,RAPA
Margaret Tremwel, MD, Telemed
Bryan Hoang, MD

CEO, Rex Jones presented an executive report and told the board the hospital has a need for nurses.  He is working on bringing in temporary staff while seeking full time employees.

After going into executive session, the board voted not to renew the contract with Dr. Gary Harrington upon its expiration at the end of October.  Dr. Harrington has been employed by Bradley County Medical Center for around three years and was brought in to provide surgery services.  According to Hospital Administrator Rex Jones, the decision was made because the hospital was losing money.  There was not a sufficient amount of surgery being preformed at BCMC to cover the cost of the surgeon.  Mr. Jones indicated the board was willing to subsidize the surgery program to a degree but the losses were too high.  He stated Dr. Harrington and he had been discussing the matter for some time and Dr. Harrington had done a fine job.  It was simply a matter of economics.  The Hospital Administrator said that the board will reevaluate the surgery program.
