Criminal Justice Class Off to Great Start at SEACBEC

Kirsten Emmerson, a WHS junior, participated in the
demonstration provided by the Warren Fire Department.
The Southeast Arkansas Community-based Education Center is excited to kick off a new program of study this fall.  Criminal Justice is being taught by Jessica Herrington and has proven to be very popular with 101 students enrolled in the classes.  Ms. Herrington says, I've enjoyed getting to know my students in our first week of classes."  She added, "It means so much to me to have several of our officers from the Warren community in my Criminal Justice classroom to help provide real-life examples of what law enforcement officials encounter on a daily basis."

Ms. Herrington is excited to be teaching in her area of interest.

She teaches three classes of Introduction to Criminal Justice and four classes of Foundations of Law Enforcement.  In the Foundations of Law Enforcement classes this past week, students have been learning about PPE, HAZMAT, ERG, OSHA, CDC, and EPA.  They have learned the proper protocol of how to respond to an emergency situation involving hazardous materials;  including the proper use of personal protective equipment to prevent the spread of pathogenic microorganisms that could cause harm to themselves or others.  They have also learned this week about how the EPA protects the environment and human health while the CDC establishes preventative measures all workplaces must enforce to control the spread of diseases. They also discussed the standards that Occupational Safety and  Health Administration enforces in order to ensure a safe and healthy workplace for all. The students also conducted an activity this week that taught them how to properly apply and remove gloves in the event they encounter bodily fluids in a law enforcement position.
Instructor Jessica Herrington, Sgt. Donald Hollingsworth,
Corporal Everett, and Fire Chief Howard Edwards.

Friday, the Warren Fire and Safety & Warren Police Department brought their equipment to demonstrate how they use personal protective equipment on their jobs and how they (as first responders) conduct a HAZMAT emergency situation. Sgt Hollingsworth and Corporal Everett explained and demonstrated to the students what equipment they must wear as a police officer daily and what to wear and expect in an emergency. They also gave handcuff/leg restraint simulation and gave tour of police car, lights, radio, camera, etc. Howard Edwards - Fire Chief and James Camp - Fireman demonstrated the use of the HAZMAT suit, SCBA, and tour of fire trucks.

The classes were thrilled to have them in their classroom!

Ms. Herrington said, "We are so grateful to have such great first responders working in our community!"
