Super Gardner Program Fills Beds at Library

During our weekly Super Gardener Program yesterday afternoon, the kids were able to fill two more raised bed gardens with dirt and get them ready for planting next week. John Gavin with the Extension Office, came out and helped build two more raised bed gardens and explained to them how they were acting like worms by mixing the HECO and sand together to make air in the dirt which allows the water to flow through the soil and help plants grow. The children also harvested the tender greens. There were enough tender greens harvested for each child to take a few home. Our turnip greens are beginning to grow turnips and the strawberry plants have flowers on them!! The kids are so excited!! Next week we will begin planting a vegetable & butterfly garden.
A big thank you to John Gavin and Kaitlyn Green for volunteering their time! And also we would like to thank the YMCA for bringing the children each week for the program!!
This project is made possible through the General Improvement Fund Grant (Arkansas Economic Development District) that Warren Branch Library received to expand and sustain our Junior Master Gardener Club program, “The Super Gardeners”.
