BCEDC Hears from School Superintendent Acklin

The Bradley County Economic Development Corporation (BCEDC) Board met Monday evening at 5:30 p.m. in the BCEDC Board Room.  After approving the March minutes and the financial statement, State Representative Jeff Wardlaw gave a brief report explaining the events and voting on Governor Hutchinson's Arkansas Works bill.  He says the fiscal session should close by the end of next week and that the issue of roads may be taken up during a special session.

Warren School District Superintendent Bobby Acklin spoke to the board giving them an overview of his career and discussing the direction of the Warren School District.  He told the board that the district employs 270 making it the largest employer in the county and that enrollment is 1640.  He told the board that SEACBEC is in good shape.  He noted there will be changes.  Eastlab and the business courses will be under the high school in the future.  Mr. Acklin said that one the entire district is committed to SBE (Standards Based Education) which he refers to as Personalized Learning.  He told the group that the district is interviewing applicants for the position of School Improvement Specialist whose job would be to help teachers with grouping, modeling lessons, and new teacher training in sbe.

Denisa Pennington informed the board that they will be hosting Steve Jones of AEDC who will present a 2-hour class on site selection on May 24, between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.  She asked the board to approve up to $500 in funds for a light meal.  The request was approved.

The May meeting was deferred until June due to the normal date of the board meeting falling on Memorial Day.

In other business, the board turned an issue of advertising in Site Selection magazine to the Marketing Committee, voted to donate $25 to the Bradley High All-School Reunion, and agreed to co-host a job fair for displaced OMP workers on May 17, between 9:00 a.m. and noon at Immanuel Baptist Church.  Mr. Boyce Hamlet of The Mad Butcher told the board they would donate water for the event.

Purchasing of a lap top was approved by the board.

The status of OK Foods and the "Grigg's Property" industrial site was discussed.  No movement has been made recently.
