Warren Housing Authority Providing New Houses

For over ten years the City of Warren Housing Authority has been administering a program aimed at assisting low income residents secure a safe and improved private residence.  The program consist of helping those who qualify, by income, by tearing down old dilapidated houses that are owned by the family living in it, and building a new modern more efficient home. The owner pays for a portion of the cost over a period of years.  The owner also has to prove they are able to pay utilities and taxes in the future.

Recently two new residences have been completed.  One is located on South Myrtle Street and the other on North Walnut.  In both cases old structures were removed and new homes constructed.  Each house cost $90,000.00 to build.  The owner will pay off $45,000.00 over twenty
years at an interest rate of 1%.  The owner must remain in the residence for the life of the loan or the loan has to be satisfied.

Local contractor David Simmons built both houses.  The homes are three bedroom units with two baths and a carport.  In both instances, the neighborhoods have been enhanced and the families have much improved living conditions.

Over a period of years the Housing Authority has built some 60 new homes utilizing the program. Most have been within the Warren city limits with a few being in other areas of Bradley County.  The
majority of the houses built have been for elderly citizens.  Funds to construct the houses are provided by the Arkansas Development Finance Authority.  The program has provided safe and decent housing for those in need and has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars for the
Warren economy.
