Donald W. Reynolds YMCA Annual Meeting

The Donald W. Reynolds YMCA of Warren and Bradley County held its annual meeting May 25, 2021 at the YMCA on Main Street in Warren.

A quorum of current board members and one public member of the Y were present along with staff. Wesley George presided.

There were no minutes from 2019 since covid-19 caused the 2019 annual meeting to be canceled.  Next, the 2020 financial reports were presented.

Executive Director of the Y, David Richey, gave a detailed report on how the organization fared in 2020 facing the difficulties of covid.  The Y was hurt financially by the forced cancelation of

After the annual meeting concluded, the board conducted the monthly meeting.

BCMC Board meets to conduct May business

By Tim Kessler

Bradley County Medical Center recently received $744,000 in Medicaid reimbursements but may have to send about $200,000 of that back, the board of directors was told at the May monthly meeting at the Brunson Medical Complex on Thursday.

Controller Leslie Huitt explained that an interim cost report was sent in around mid-March to determine the reimbursements. A Medicare reimbursement still hasn’t been determined. However, since costs per day are decreasing, the $200,000 return was indicated.

Huitt reported most patient volumes were up but the Women’s Clinic and Senior Care volumes were down.

She said expenses had risen by 2.9 percent in April, mostly due to rising prices and inflation.

However, CEO Steve Henson said the hospital has participated in a 340b program which had saved about $146,000 in prescription costs in its first year of operation.

Huitt said figures were being adjusted for the annual audit which should be completed by mid-June.

In other action:
  • Public relations director Dennen Cuthbertson reported on his job. He said he was a Warren native, obtained bachelor and master’s degrees from Arkansas State University and worked as the ASU sports information director before coming back to Warren to work at BCMC.
    • He said his job consists of maintaining social media contacts, marketing and public relations. Besides the BCMC Facebook page, he set up a separate Rural Health Clinic Facebook page. He also has created billboards and does news releases. Some communications have also been made with the Hispanic community.

The Arkansas Rent Relief Program offers financial help to pay overdue and upcoming rent and utilities for eligible Arkansas renters. Landlords who have tenants unable to pay their rent because of lost income or the COVID-10 pandemic also may apply.  The state of Arkansas has $173 million of federal funding for the Arkansas Rent Relief Program. Once an application is approved, money would go directly to landlords and utility companies.

Outdoors: Arkansas turkey season concludes with just over 7,000 birds checked

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas hunters harvested and checked 7,010 eastern wild turkeys during the 2021 turkey season, which concluded May 9. While the harvest showed a similar decrease to that of surrounding states, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission biologists are hopeful for the future.

“We did expect to see a decline in checked birds this year,” Jeremy Wood, AGFC Turkey Program coordinator, said. “With conservative season dates and new regulations in place to spread hunting pressure, we tried to give turkeys as much of a chance as we could to breed and create future hunting opportunities while maintaining a reasonably good hunting experience. We have to think about the resource first if we want to see the population increase.”
