33-Year Old Charged with Felony Commercial Burglary and Misdemeanor Arson in Hermitage

On April 1, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Sgt. Greg Freeman of the Hermitage Police Department received a call from Bobby Mann stating that someone had broken into The Hermit and that the perpetrator was still inside the building.  Minutes later, upon arrival, Sgt. Freeman observed that the front door glass was broken.  He contacted the dispatcher and advised than that he was conducting a search of the building.

During the search, Sgt. Freeman discovered a white male in the hallway of the back dry storage area inside a trash bag.  He appeared to be "huffing paint from a spray paint can."

The suspect was taken into custody without further incident and was later identified as Charlie R. Hill, a 33 year old.

Video from the security system showed Hill setting the napkin holders on fire in the dining area in an attempt to set the building on fire.  The attempt failed as fires went out.  Most of the freezers were opened, and some items were sitting on the floor.

Nothing was reported taken at the time of the police report.

Hill was transported to the Ashley County Detention Center in Hamburg.  He was charged with Felony Commercial Burglary and Misdemeanor Arson.

Hill appeared April 2 for his first hearing where a bond of $35,000 was set.
