School Board Hires Carla Wardlaw as Assistant Superintendent

The Warren School Board met Monday, April 8, at 7:00 p.m. in the administrative office board room.

After approving the minutes of the previous meetings held on March 7, 11, 14, and 28, the board listened to a presentation by Jonalyn Reep about the ABC Preschool program.  She informed the board that she has recently submitted a grant application for an addition 40 slots.  ABC currently has six classrooms and one classroom at the ECLC building.  She told the board that the school has a waiting list.

The board went into executive session to discuss personnel matters.  After returning from the executive session, the following recommendations were made and approved:

Carla Wardlaw was hired to fill the vacancy of Assistant Superintendent.

Two resignations effective at the end of the contract year were approved:  Kristi Ridgell as Middle School Math teacher and Alexandra Brown as an Eastside Para Professional.

Devin McDairmid and Kayla Thornton were hired to fill English teacher positions at Warren High School.

All classified staff with restrictions were issued contracts.

The board heard two recommendations of the personnel policy committee.  The first recommendation was approved without opposition.  It revised the wording in the personnel policy to include a statement that only emergency sick leave would be accepted for Professional Development days.  The second recommendation which would have extended the sick leave policy to include more family members than the "immediately family" was denied by a vote of 4 oppose and 3 approving.  Board members voting against the measure, Dr. Kerry Pennington, Lance Cobb, Memory Frazer, and Greg Morman, expressed the need to look deeper into the matter.  Teachers, by law are allotted one sick leave day per contract month which means most teachers have 10 days sick leave per year.  The proposed measure would have made the sick leave policy match that of the bereavement policy.  Mr. Tolbert asked Dr. Pennington and Mr. Cobb to look into the matter and come up with an alternative proposal to that of the personnel policy committee of teachers.

The board reviewed the Audit Report and approved the financial report given by Mrs. Debbie Hargrave.

In the Superintendent's report, Mr. Tolbert noted that students in grades 3-8 are taking Benchmark tests this week.  The Geometry end of course exam will be held April 16 and 17, while the EOC Biology exam will be given April 23-24.

Mr. Tolbert told the board that Reese Morman and Cameron Simmons along with Logan Adams and Nathan Hairston recently competed in the National Regional History Bee in Memphis, Tennessee.  Morman and Simmons qualified to compete in the National Contest.  These students are sponsored by their instructor Clay Bemberg.

The Middle School Honors Banquet will be held May 6.

Mr. Tolbert informed the board that the 1/2 day school was released earlier for inclement weather will be made up June 3.
