School Board Accepts Resignations and Discusses Student Retake Progress

The Warren School Board met Monday night at 7:00 p.m. for the regular monthly meeting.  After adopting the minutes of the January 20 meeting and a special called meeting held on January 28, the board approved consent items.

Principals gave minute messages to the board.  WMS Principal Glenetta Burks noted that the digital sign has been installed at the school and awaits electrical work.  She also told the board that the online Spanish classes at Middle School and Brunson have begun.  WHS Principal Gary Jackson reported to the board on the progress of the freshmen students retaking classes they failed first semester.  He noted that of the 39 retaking English, 8 are currently at a failing status.  In math 13 of 58 are failing.  He noted that the number still failing CBA is in line with the other subjects.  He also stated that a position of keyboarding instructor will be moved to high school next year to help students better make the transition.  Dr. Kerry Pennington recognized that the number of failures are down and inquired if the school had plans for what to do if the students continued to fail.  Mr. Jackson said the school would have a larger freshman class next year.  He pointed out that the teachers are keeping logs of the calls they are making to parents and that other measures are being taken.  A question was asked about the number of students taking advantage of before and after school tutoring.  It was pointed out that the school is communicating with Star City about Project Lead the Way and working in tutoring focus areas.

Jonalyn Reep reported that Mrs. Judy Shipp, one of the teachers now teaching a CBA retake class, has reported some success.  She recognized ABC Preschool Director Colleen Watkins who reported that the Preschool underwent an inspection.  The evaluation is called ECERS and evaluates the quality provided.  Warren ABC Preschool received high marks of 5.84 and 5.95, some of the highest in the state.

The board went into executive session for personnel matters.  Upon returning they accepted the resignations of Robert Clements - JROTC AI at WHS, Julia Foster WHS math instructor (retirement), Thomas Arnold - WMS Assistant Principal (retirement), Barbara Arnold- WMS Counselor (retirement), Judy Shipp - CTE Instructor at SEACBEC (retirement), Amy Wynne (moving out of state), Cedrick Franklin - WHS Custodian (effective 2-9-15) and Dr. Machell Dailey as cheerleading sponsor.  Dr. Daily is not resigning from teaching.
