Rural Fire Department Responds to Late-Night Fire at Fulghum Fibers, Inc.

Shortly before 11:00 p.m. Friday night, the Bradley County Rural Fire Department responded to a fire at Fulghum Fibers, Inc. located on the North Bypass.  According to Mr. Saffold of Fulghum Fibers, the fire was sparked by friction of metal rubbing against metal in the hopper area of the plant.

According to rural fireman Bobby Hargraves, sawdust fires are difficult to put out.  Throughout the hours the department was on location, they continually sprayed the area with water and watched for smoke and sparks.

Mr. Saffold told salineriverchronicle.com that they had watered down the area before shutting down Friday evening.   He also indicated that the high wind made sawdust fires dangerous.

The Rural Fire Department remained on site with one truck and six firemen until all indications of sparks or smoldering had ceased.
