Hermitage School Board Conducts Grievance Hearing

Monday April 14th was the time for the Hermitage School Boards regular monthly meeting but some of the business of the Board was far form normal.  In addition to conducting the standard business of a monthly meeting such as reviewing school finances, the members found themselves holding a grievance hearing concerning a school employee.

The hearing consisted of Mrs. Davis, who works in the cafeteria, presenting her case and requesting back pay as a result of not having been paid the proper wages over an extended period of time.  Mrs. Davis was represented by an attorney and the school district also had their attorney on hand.  A hearing officer presided and both sides made statements and questioned witnesses.  The school superintendent took the position that Mrs. Davis had not filed her grievance in a legally timely manner and that the case should not be heard.  Mrs. Davis and her lawyer made a case that another person, not as qualified as Mrs. Davis, had been hired at a higher rate of pay and that several procedures had not been properly followed by the district. Mrs. Davis' attorney told the board that this was a case of breach of contract and if the board did not pay the back wages a lawsuit would be filed.

After the hearing was completed, the school board went into executive session to deliberate.  Upon returning the board voted that although Mrs. Davis had failed to file the grievance timely, they would waive the time requirement and consider her case.  The Hermitage School Board then voted to uphold Mrs. Davis' grievance and awarded her $6000.00 in back pay.

During the meeting the board finalized the refinancing of a bond issue that will save the district a considerable amount of money.  The bond closing will be May 18th.

During the financial report Superintendent Rankin informed the board that the yearly budget remains in line.  He indicated it would have to be continually monitored to assure the district stays in good shape.

After the meeting Mr. Rankin told salineriverchronicle.con that the new superintendent, Ms. Tracy Tucker, will be on the job July1st.  He stated this is her first tiem to serve as a superintendent.  She has been a principal and is coming to Hermitage.
