Lexy, River, Lynn, Susanne, and Jade Grice: Bradley County Farm Family of the Year 2015 |
The family's farm consists of nine acres of tomatoes, 35 acres of pasture land, and 25 acres of timber. They also raise quarter horses.
Their fresh market tomatoes are sold to Harrod and Hensley Tomato Company which distributes them to Wal-Mart or Del Monte Fresh Produce. Heirloom tomatoes and other fresh produce are sold on the farm. The Grices also operate a trucking operation throughout the year.
Mr. Grice says, "I was raised here on the farm by my great grandfather, Herbert Forrest. I grew up raising tomatoes and watermelons with him. After graduating, I was a logging contractor for about six years and then started farming along side of logging for about five more years. To focus more on farming we sold out of the logging business. We purchased my great uncle Roy Forrest's farming land that was adjacent to ours to increase our acreage. The wisdom that these two farmers passed along to me has been vital to my success."
The Grice family are members of Saline Baptist Church where Susanne teaches on Wednesday nights, serves as treasurer, and serves on the stewardship and building and grounds committee. Lynn is the Vice President of Bradley County Riding Club. He also coaches baseball and t-ball. Mrs. Grice is a 4-H Rusty Spurs Assistant Leader. She is a licensed practical nurse.
