Board Hears Presentation About Turf Field

The Warren School Board met Monday evening at 6:00 for their regular monthly meeting with all members present except Joel Tolefree.  After the minutes of the Dec. 14, the board heard a presentation from Ceciliam concerning the district's test scores.

The board was dismissed into executive session.  After returning, the following personnel actions were taken:

Sandra Tolefree was transferred to High School Cafeteria Manager
Marion Thomas was transferred to Primary Cafeteria Manager
Kathy Poole was transferred to 7 hours in place of Marion Thomas
Tammy Huitt was transferred to 6 hours in place of Kathy Poole

The board approved a bid from Masters Transportation for a bus in the amount of $24,500.00.

A bid from T & T Construction was approved for Bus Barn Yardwork in the amount of $13,300.00.

The financial report for December was given by Debbi Hargrave.  The board approved the report.

Superintendent Bobby Acklin gave his report to the board which included:
the announcement that the new walk-in cooler has arrived and is being installed, recognizing that Governor Asa Hutchinson has proclaimed January 2016 Arkansas School Board Recognition Month, and that the school will be hosting a reception on Tuesday, February 2 to honor and recognize the board.  Invitations will be sent for this event.  He pointed out that on the same night, Warren will be hosting the Monticello Billies and invited all to attend.

Tim Cohen, a representative of Athletic Surface Plus made a presentation to the board concerning a turf field for Jim Hurley, Jr. Stadium.  He told the board that his company has installed more than 50 turf fields in Arkansas.  He discussed the process that installing turf would take and ways to finance the project.  He told the board that turf fields save on watering, painting, and mowing.  Other pluses are that the field would have a French drain which would greatly improve field and sideline drainage.  The field would be 192 feet wide which would allow for regulation soccer.  In addition, a turf field would allow for greater playability.  Teams could practice and play on the field without fear of tearing up the grass.  It was also noted that statistics show turf to be 3-29% safer.  He shared with the board a rendering of the proposed Warren field with the logs in the center of the field.  The field would have an 8-year warranty.  Mr. Cohen reviewed ways districts can finance such a project: school funded, volunteer donations, selling legacy logos, field sponsor logos, etc.  Logos could be changed and added years later as needed.  According to Superintendent Acklin, the cost could be between $500,000.00 and $700,000.

The board voted to extend Mr. Acklin's contract two years with a 2% pay increase.
